Mistaken for a famous but reclusive author of the same name, lonely Shriver attends a writers' conference at a small midwestern liberal arts college. Completely unfamiliar with the novel he supposedly wrote and utterly unprepared for the magnitude of the reputation that precedes him, Shriver is feted, fawned over, featured at stuffy literary panels, and barely manages to play it cool. Things quickly go awry when one of the other guest authors suddenly disappears and Shriver becomes a prime suspect in the investigation. But most vexing of all, Shriver has fallen in love with the conference organizer, who believes he's someone else.

I don’t remember the last time I’ve laughed so much while reading a book. I don’t normally write reviews, but I enjoyed this book so much I thought I should spread the word.I was drawn to the book by the hilarious premise: A regular guy mistaken for a famous but reclusive author. The book hooks you right from the start, with Shriver being thrown into situation after situation where he has to assume the identity of an author he knows nothing about, but who apparently wrote a masterpiece 20 years ago (awesomely titled, Goat Time).
The book has so many great elements as Shriver tries his own hand at storytelling, becomes enamored with one of the professors, and talks writing with the other guests and students at the conference. Not to mention the mystery of the disappearing author. The way the author weaves in mystery, humor, and Shriver's feelings of being an outsider is truly spectacular.
On top of that, it's highly original, one of those books you read and go, “I wish I thought of that.” Part mystery, part comedy, part thriller as you wait for Shriver’s secret to be revealed, it’s a book that stays with you because of how unique yet familiar the story is. I’ve always loved stories about outsiders and this book takes that classic premise and puts it in the fascinating (and strange) world of writers.
I also have to mention the character T. Watzczesnam, a cowboy/writer on the faculty. His scenes are some of the funniest in the book.
If you’re looking for a book with humor, depth, and great storytelling, this is a must read.

Shriver A Novel Chris Belden 9781504675192 Books Reviews
Not being in the writing business, it's hard to know how much of this account of a writer's conference is based in fact or fiction. However, I found this book very entertaining with a large cast of interesting characters. Once I got started, I couldn't put it down. I read very little fiction but I'm glad I read this.
Hilarious and entertaining
Very funny.
Loved this novel. It was difficult to put down because it was so entertaining and delightful. On top of it's readability, everyone can relate to feeling like an imposter at some point in their lives. The main character's anxieties and coping mechanisms are hilarious as well as believable. I don't think a book has given me this much pleasure in a long time.
Like all Chris Belden novels, Shriver operates in a world of its own inescapable logic, where characters are irresistibly drawn into ill-advised adventures and the siren songs of better angels inevitably drown out the fretful pleas of better judgment, leading ultimately—no spoiler here—to a kind of haphazard salvation. As with, say, Kafka, Hitchcock, Flannery O'Connor, or the Coen brothers, one of the lasting pleasures of a Chris Belden novel is that once you've come to know his world, you can dip back in again and visit there anytime you like.
On the surface this was a really good story What I liked about it also was that it put a different perspective on what it means to ‘be a writer.’ The characters were fun too.
I can't remember how I learned of this book, but I ordered it and it arrived one day in the mail. Contrary to my normal custom of adding a new book to my overflowing piles, I opened it and started reading while still standing in the kitchen. Something about it grabbed my attention, and I couldn't put it down. Mr. Shriver probably on the far side of middle-age, boring, unexceptional physically, and someone you'd probably never think twice about, somehow seized my sympathies and left me thinking about him even when I wasn't reading. I found myself recounting the story to my husband and speculating about how it all might end. My hunches didn't pan out . . . but maybe they did. In the end I was utterly satisfied and still suspicious that he maybe WAS Shriver after all.
